Oooof! Yesterday was a day. It started out with some news that we may need to move from DC by January, which is a bit earlier than we were planning on. Then I received some not so good news about my aunt, who has been in the hospital for the last week. Just a couple hours later we received an update that was basically a 180 of the original email. To say it was a whirlwind of emotions is an understatement.
So instead, let’s focus on today’s dark & moody styled shoot. I love when couples step outside the box of what is ‘normal’ for weddings, and this dark color palette is just that. I remember the very first wedding I assisted Bree with, Megan wore a stunning black dress to walk down the aisle. It was the first time I’d seen a bride not wear some shade of white, and it just fit her personality and the vibe of their wedding so well. I hope this inspires you to really encapsulate your style on your wedding day!
With all of the social media and print outlets geared towards weddings and trends, we rarely see couples branching out to explore non-traditional facets. It was because of this, that we decided to encapsulate the darker, romantic side, and translate that into a mysterious and moody, yet elegant, styled shoot!
In order to capture the dark and mysterious side of romanticism, we enveloped bold and lavish colors amidst a moody backdrop. By tying textured saturation to subtle lighting, the stormy inspiration and divergent styling, our design goal was to meld their love for uniqueness with an appreciation of the variety that can be wedding visions.
For a venue, we knew instantly there was no other choice than The River View at Occoquan. With their historic mill and swooning river views, the entire property is full of these remarkable, meticulous details that we cherished as a planner and designer, and played perfectly into the inspiration of our vision. Starting with a concept of a wispy gown accenting an inviting neckline, we transformed the dress into a skirt atop a close-fitting bodysuit, a uniquely jeweled earpiece, and a matching spotlight necklace. For the Groom, we wanted a more dominant, Fifty Shades of Grey appearance, encapsulated by a dark suit and a shadowed beard. Upon meeting the couple, we were instantly drawn to their love, and utilized traditional and symbolic elements of red and pink to expound upon their bond and augment the moody vibe.
