Well this weekend wasn’t exactly what we planned – it took a turn Thursday afternoon when we had to pick Evie up from daycare early because she had a super high fever. Friday was spent at the doctor and then on the couch, monitoring her fever (ask me how many times I watched Frozen and Moana this weekend ;). We were supposed to spend Sat-today potty training Evie, but they don’t recommend doing it if the kiddo is sick (which is smart because her mood, eating habits, and sleep schedule has been ALL OVER THE PLACE), instead we mostly stayed home, cleaned, & enjoyed brunch with some dear friends. I tried some new paleo recipes, which came out delicious, and Andy completed his latest home decor project. Today will be more couch time hanging with my favorite 2.8 year old ;) Happy Monday Romancers!
“Well, this probably won’t work out, because you like precision and I like estimating things.” Despite this “concern” Georgina accepted Steve’s invitation to go out drinks at Slipstream the following Friday night. That Friday at work, a friend asked Steve when his birthday was, prompting Steve to realize that his birthday was in fact that day. Worried about the possibility of an unsuccessful first date as his only birthday memory, Steve asked Georgina if she would be willing to push back the date to later in the evening so that his coworkers could take him for a drink. Georgina found the fact that Steve had forgotten his own birthday a bit unbelievable, but if it was an excuse, at least it was an impressively creative one. She shrugged it off and texted back “just tell me how many drinks you’re having so I can match you.”
Maybe it was the alcohol, but the first date was perfect. They connected on everything that they talked about, and laughed and smiled until their faces hurt.
When Georgina thinks back on that date, she feels embarrassed by how obnoxious they must have been for other customers – talking and laughing loudly, and looking so proud and amused by how perfectly things were going.
It seemed too good to be true. (And it really was Steve’s birthday.)
Within a few weeks they were spending a lot of time together. One time, after spending most of a long weekend together for the first time, Steve really wanted to keep hanging out. Realizing that he might be overstaying his welcome, he decided to go ahead and ask if Georgina needed some time alone. Georgina responded by saying, “well, I probably shouldn’t say this, but I don’t really need any personal space.” From then on, Steve and Georgina spent almost every evening together.
About six months after they met, Georgina got a job that had a difficult commute from her apartment and effectively moved into Steve’s 375 square foot studio. It was small for two people, but it didn’t matter since they tended to be no more than a couple of feet apart at all times anyways. They spent so much time alone together in that tiny apartment that one day, with all sincerity, Georgina asked Steve “What if we become too weird for society?”
Almost three years later, they continue to laugh about how much time they’re able to spend together in their (now larger) Columbia Heights apartment with almost no source of entertainment. Georgina says that she still feels energized and amazed by their compatibility every day, and that at moments, they absolutely have become too weird for society.
Last summer, Steve planned a weekend getaway for them in the Shenandoah Valley. They spent their first night there doing banal activities like grocery shopping, which was very effective at curbing Georgina’s suspicions that Steve might be planning something special. The next evening, Georgina was outside, reading and taking in beautiful views from the porch. Steve joined her, putting on a playlist of some of their favorite motown hits. When Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers came on (their song) Steve asked Georgina if she would dance. At the conclusion of the song, Steve got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. By then, Georgina (who cries at everything) was already aware of what was happening and had happy tears in her eyes. They spent the evening sipping champagne and watching an unusually beautiful sunset.
After the Shenandoah proposal, they felt that this would make a romantic location for the wedding. Within a month or so, sight unseen, they had rented seven cabins along the Shenandoah River – just enough to fit their closest family and friends. They were extremely lucky to have found a cluster of cabins that, not only were walking distance from one another, but also provided beautiful backdrop for a wedding. The natural beauty of the cabin property allowed them to keep decor minimal, and limit the amount of time spent planning to just a couple of months.
In May, Georgina and Steve will be moving to the Dominican Republic for Steve’s job, where they are planning lazy afternoons on the beach with their future adoptive dogs.
