We’re getting back into the swing of things for 2015 with our first real Virginia wedding feature of the year. Kelly & Tree planned a completely DIY wedding created entirely by themselves, their family, and friends. And they did it in some SERIOUS vintage styling. These bridesmaids dresses are ones to remember (though unfortunately no longer for sale on Etsy) – they are GORGEOUS. And Kelly ROCKED her vintage hair & dress. Check it out!
Each of the paper flowers I made had button centers from my mom’s button jar so each one came from a coat or sweater that some one in my family wore at some point. They are made out of scrap paper books which are comprised of several different patterns in coordinating colors so it made it really fun and easy to mix and match while still having a really cohesive feel. I went with dusty blue and yellow because I’m not really a fan of traditionally fall colors.
We wanted to use the freight shed in Yorktown because of its beautiful view of the river its also where we took our engagement photos. Its the beach we spend our summers at. It was very important to me to not spend an arm and a leg on anything I love the idea that something doesn’t have to be expensive to be beautiful. my husband is a local police officer and I am a bar manager so neither of us wanted to break the bank. I got my dress and shoes off of ebay! One of my favorite details is a vintage mirror from the 1920 that I found at the habitat for humanity store for $20 a friend of mine painted it with the blue that matched our colors but distressed it so the original gold came through and repurposed into a frame to hold my seating assignments.

One of our best friends Jeremy acted as our officiant and he did such an amazing job, our vows to each other were completely perfect for each of us. Mine to Tree were taken from a Flogging Molly song “Between a Man and a Woman” and his to me were from a Postal Service cover of John Lennon’s “grow old with me”. Tree and I both wrote a little something to say to each other right before hand so we got to add our own personal touches to an already special moment.
His wife Erin another amazing friend thankfully was able to take control and act as mistress of ceremonies she made sure everything ran seamlessly while I was getting ready. The ceremony itself was held in the same space as the reception so our guests were already comfortable in their seats with cocktails during the ceremony! Our bartender was one of my old coworkers. My families long time friend Charlie put together all the centerpieces out of all of the pieces I made as well as making the bouquets out of flowers I picked up early that morning from a wholesale florist shop. One of my friends Stephanie is a wonderful beautician and hairdresser was able to travel all the way from Maryland to do my makeup.
The hair piece and belt were hand made by a family friend out of pieces of my mothers wedding dress. It turned something that would have otherwise been completely unwearable by me into something that made my wedding look complete.
Each guest replaced their name cards with a Polaroid picture of themselves and that has turned into art for my home. Its something i will treasure for life. Even if i replace the pictures with newer ones over time the frame will still have been a part of my wedding. I have a mild obsession with vintage touches, hence the polaroids and the seamed stockings I just want everything to feel timeless.
