Wowza Romancers, it’s been a bit too long since my last full-fledged wedding feature! The holidays came and went and I am hunkering down and getting my life (and inbox) organized and ready for 2014! So what better way to kick off a brand new year, than with a wedding feature – full of love, laughter, and some awesome personalized details. Kristen & Tyler used bright colors in their wedding design and also inserted some seriously fun details – like exiting their reception to the Jurassic Park theme song (YES) and having Star Wars cake toppers! They used the theme “stuff we love” and so naturally their wedding was a perfect fit for us here at Capitol Romance. Let’s get it going.
A special thanks to Kelly Ewell Photography for submitting this Virginia wedding to us!

Love this overview of their wedding from the photographer:
Kristin and Tyler crafted a wedding that was a complete reflection of them. From Kristin’s floral head wreath, to the Star Wars cake toppers (complete with matching veil and tie), to the variety of single-layer cake centerpieces on each table, to the overall theme that was simply “stuff we love”. Together they we calm, cool, and collected. Laid back and ready for whatever the day brought, just as long as they ended it together as a married couple.
My wedding dress didn’t have much pomp and I decided to go without a veil, and instead wore a crown of flowers – I think this was my favorite fashion decision because it brought some color into an otherwise neutral ensemble.
From the bride on their color choices:
We chose orange and yellow as our colors because they’re so bright and cheerful. We also chose the charcoal gray suits because Tyler’s favorite color to wear is charcoal, and it just happens to go really well with bright colors. We really liked the old-fashioned cut of the suits because they looked great and traditional while still being “out of the norm”.

We chose Whitehall Manor because it’s such a beautiful estate. We had visited a handful of other potential venues, but when we pulled into Whitehall’s parking lot both of us said, “Yup, this is the place we want to get married.” The house and grounds just felt like “home”, if that makes any sense. The owners of Whitehall are also an amazing bunch, they worked wonders and even saved my wedding bouquet with a few well-hidden pipe cleaners when a number of the flower stems decided to break.
The bride’s mother helped extensively with planning and the bridesmaids were all extremely supportive when I really felt the stress of planning.
The bride’s brother, P.D., and a very good friend of the bride and groom, Blake, both gave short speeches during our wedding ceremony. Tyler’s cousin Rachel (who is a professional singer) sang a personalized rendition of “A Never-Ending Road” by Loreena McKennitt.
My bridesmaids all purchased “chameleon” bridesmaid dresses and found individual ways to wrap them.
I was in charge of most of the details and wanted to give off an eclectic, mismatched, and off-beat vibe while still maintaining a sense of unity and polish.
Our homemade wedding cake toppers: an X-Wing bride and a Tie Fighter groom, from Star Wars. My husband bought the models and I made the wedding “clothing” for them. The mis-matched cake plates at each table (which were provided by my bridesmaid Audrey). My husband and I also decided to forego one large wedding cake and instead put one small cake with fresh flowers on top at each table so the guests could serve themselves. We had five different cake flavors – vanilla, chocolate, spice, mandarin orange, and white chocolate with raspberry filling.
Congratulations Kristin & Tyler – thank you for sharing your beautiful, personalized Virginia wedding with us! A special thanks again to Kelly Ewell Photography for sharing her images of today’s Whitehall Manor wedding feature submitted via Two Bright Lights.
